Holiday Homework!

The homework over break will be to focus on your city for the virtual journey.  Simply find 5 to 10 facts to share with the class about your location.  Some kids have created Power Points for their city and others have made posters or city signs.  Whatever your child brings in will be great, I have been doing this for 15 years and we always make it work and it is fun.  I am up front with the kids the whole time and we simply have a spirited conversation about their town.

Be creative and have fun!!  Kids have given quizzes or brought in food from the region before.  Like I said if you ask I will probably say GO FOR IT!!  It can be simple or elaborate I make either a celebration of learning.

I have the itinerary on the back of this sheet.  I am thinking about changing the presentation time to 2 o’clock because of our schedule but we will have to see how that works out; as of right now it is still 3:15 on presentation days.  Again, have fun with this!!

PEEK AT THE WEEKS

MATH:  Multiplication and Division
SCIENCE: Sound
HEALTH:   shelter, clothing, basic needs
SOCIAL ST.:  community roles, campsite jobs

We are still very busy in December.  Let’s meet for a quick party planning meeting right after school in the room on Monday the ninth.  We will compile our ideas and come up with another great party!  We have many projects going on in the room!  This is always an exciting part of the year.

Report cards are coming home and they are always a tough one for me.  I really feel like education is a journey and the kids are all in a different place but I also understand the need for a report that shows how they are doing.   That is what the report card is, simply a look at where they are in the journey.   It is easy to take part and to help, when we work with our kids it shows that we care.  Do not over analyze the report card but instead use it as a guide for what we need to focus on next.  I think that you should know that for some of the grades the highest possible mark was a 3.   Again, don’t get caught in the numbers but keep growth the goal!!  The MCA practices that I will be sending home are great for both extension and review!  I am proud of how this group has come together and how excited they are to learn and grow!  Let’s keep it going!!

When we get back after break we are going to be focusing on our virtual journey.  The journey takes on a life of its own and the learning is authentic and fun. City guides on the web are a great place to go for information about your city and state.  I look forward to meeting our guests from around the country!  Look at the archives on the blog to see what kids have done over the years!  A lot of kids now have made Power Points for their city.  It is pretty slick for their presentation!

The homework over winter break will be to focus on your city for the virtual journey!   Some of you will present soon while others of you will have a little more time.  Find out as much as you can about your city and state and be ready to share that with your class on your day!  HAVE FUN WITH THIS!!   More information is on the back!!

E3 Local Yocal

OK, here we go.  I will try to explain this as best I can.  I am sure there will be questions but here is a go...  I am sending home the list of cities that we are going to go through on our virtual journey.  Each child will get to present for a city.  I want to stress that this is a fun public speaking opportunity for your child.  I am up front with them the whole time interviewing them about their city.  Your child will come in and role play that they are a local from their city and that we are meeting them for the first time.  We have fun learning about different places in our country.  We also learn that every place has its own story.

Most of the kids create a poster that has information about their city but more and more kids are creating power points that lead them through their presentation.  The poster or Power Point helps me ask question and helps the child answer question about their town.  Many kids prepare note cards and present facts about their town.  Some even give quizzes at the end of their presentation.  I want to stress THIS SHOULD BE FUN!  You can be creative or as simple as you want.  Some kids come in with props and costumes and others simply present information about their city.  Both options are great!!  Have fun!  Keep it simple!!  It is wide open.  If you are going to ask, my response most likely will be GO FOR IT!!   (Once the days are set you are welcome to come in for their presentation.  It will be at 3:10 each day!)

Some questions that I will probably ask are:  Why is your city here?  What is it known for?  What can we do for fun?  What are the main industries?  What do you do for a living?

Here is an example of students in costume with a poster presenting for a city...

The schedule with the date of the presentation and the presenter is attached to this update!!
